Our Methodology
How We Test & Rate AI Tools
We believe transparency is the foundation of trust. Here's exactly how we evaluate every AI tool on LaunchToolsAI — from our hands-on testing process to our rating scale, our affiliate practices, and our commitment to keeping reviews current.
The Process
Our Testing Process
Five deliberate steps that turn raw exploration into trustworthy reviews. No shortcuts. No AI-generated summaries. Just real people using real tools in real workflows.
We Sign Up and Use Every Tool Ourselves
No screenshots from vendor press kits. No second-hand summaries. Every tool we review is used firsthand with a real account, a real workflow, and enough hours to separate genuine value from slick marketing. We build actual projects, generate real content, and push each tool to its practical limits before forming an opinion.
Test Across Standard Use Cases
We evaluate every tool against a consistent set of real-world scenarios: writing assistance, code generation, design iteration, data analysis, workflow automation, and team collaboration. A tool that shines in one niche but fails general utility gets that nuance reflected in its rating.
Compare Against Competitors in the Same Category
No tool exists in a vacuum. We run side-by-side comparisons against the top alternatives in the same category — measuring output quality, speed, ease of use, and feature depth. Our ratings reflect how a tool stacks up, not just how it performs in isolation.
Document Real Pros and Cons From Experience
Every pro and con you read on our reviews comes from direct, hands-on observation. We document what surprised us, what frustrated us, and what made us keep the tool open in a browser tab long after testing ended. No fluff. No filler. Just honest experience.
Update Reviews When Tools Change
AI tools evolve at breakneck speed — a 3-star tool in January can be a 5-star powerhouse by March. We monitor the tools we review and re-test them quarterly at minimum (monthly for fast-moving categories). Every review page carries a visible last-updated date so you know the information is current.
The Scale
What Our Ratings Mean
We use a 5-star scale because it's universally recognizable. But every star has a specific, honest meaning — we don't hand out 5-star ratings lightly.
5 Stars
Best-in-Class
The tool sets the standard in its category. No major flaws. Excellent performance, UX, and value. This is what we'd pick for our own daily work — and what we'd confidently recommend to a colleague.
4 Stars
Excellent With Minor Limitations
A strong, polished tool that gets the job done exceptionally well. It may have one or two limitations — a missing integration, a rough edge in the UX, or a pricing tier that isn't ideal for everyone — but those are far outweighed by its strengths.
3 Stars
Solid Tool, Notable Tradeoffs
Does what it promises, but with tradeoffs that matter. Maybe it's slower than competitors, has a clunky interface, or is missing features that are standard elsewhere. Worth using in specific contexts, but there's likely a better option in the category.
2 Stars
Functional but Significantly Limited
The tool technically works, but the limitations are hard to ignore. This rating often reflects tools that are early-stage, have reliability issues, or simply underdeliver relative to their price point. Use with caution.
1 Star
Not Recommended
Does not meet the minimum bar for professional use. We don't publish many 1-star reviews — we'd rather spend time on tools worth your attention — but when a tool is overhyped and underdelivers, we say so plainly.

Affiliate Disclosure
We believe you deserve to know exactly how this site makes money. Here's the honest truth, in compliance with the FTC's Endorsement Guides.
Some links on this site are affiliate links. We may earn a commission if you purchase through our links, at no extra cost to you.
Our Ratings Are Never Influenced by Affiliate Relationships
We rate tools based on merit, not monetization potential. An affiliate program does not earn a tool a higher rating — ever. Our testing process and rating criteria are applied uniformly to every tool we review, regardless of whether we have a financial relationship with the vendor.
We Reject Paid Placements and Sponsored Reviews
LaunchToolsAI does not accept payment for reviews, paid placements, or sponsored content disguised as editorial. If a brand wants visibility on our site, they can advertise — and it will be clearly labeled as such. Our editorial content is walled off from commercial influence.
Freshness
How We Keep Reviews Current
AI tools change fast. A review written six months ago might describe a completely different product today. Here's our commitment to keeping information fresh.
Quarterly Minimum
Every tool on our site is re-tested at least once per quarter. We log in, run through our standard use cases, and check for new features, pricing changes, or performance regressions.
Monthly for Fast-Moving Categories
Categories like large language models, AI coding assistants, and image generation tools evolve rapidly. We re-test these monthly to keep our recommendations accurate.
Last Updated Dates
Every review page displays the date it was last updated. If a review is older than 6 months without an update, it carries a banner indicating that a re-evaluation is pending.
